I once thought pillboxes were all the same. Then I started using them for patients and realized that small differences make a huge difference.
I started with simple pill boxes. The type with seven small compartments. Companies hand these out for free. These boxes work except they tend to come open easily. So I would put a rubberband over it to hopefully keep them closed. Taking them anywhere is dangerous since they come open so easily. The pro is they are cheap, but if you take pills more than once a day you have to manage multiple boxes and they open easily.
Then over the years, I had patients move into Abiding Joy Senior Care Home. In the early years, I would use whatever container they brought. This became a management nightmare. Three people needing medication management, with assisted living care, and all with a different system. Then I changed to twice-a-day pill boxes but they popped open. This meant a nightmare if they fell. Imagine 14 little compartments all opening and 140 pills rolling in every direction.
After a lot of research and analysis, I came upon the organizers pictured above. Sounds silly that a pill box can be such an important decision but often times it is the little things that make the biggest difference in our lives. I now own six of these boxes. Each resident has 2 boxes since I fill pills every two weeks. Each day can be lifted out individually, so when it is time to give pills I grab the designated day and bring it to the resident. They rarely drop since the size is easy to manage, but when they do drop they usually stay closed. The week box also locks closed so it is a great system and I am thankful that I no longer have to chase pills across the floor.
