Care Home vs Home Care

When I talk to people about aging, most people state that their goal is to grow old in their own home. Most want to avoid nursing homes and assisted livings. They want the comfort of their own home. What are the advantages and disadvantages for seniors and their families?

Home Care comes to the senior wherever they are living. There are three types of home care. Skilled care provided by a nurse and or therapist such as physical or occupational therapy. This care is usually short term to help recover from a specific problem. This is oftentimes paid for by insurance or medicare. The goal is to recover from the problem and usually only lasts for a few months. The care providers come in for an hour or so and address the wound or therapy and then leave. They are not there cooking meals and helping with bedtime or other care needs.

The other two types of Home Care are similar. They are caregivers paid for by the senior to provide help with meals, personal care, and light housekeeping. The two types are private caregivers that the senior contracts with directly versus hiring a company to provide the caregivers. The end result with both is a caregiver coming out for as many hours as desired to provide care in your home. This can work well especially when only limited help is needed. The two complaints I hear the most are caregivers not showing up and cost.

Abiding Joy Senior Care Home is an example of a residential care home. With this model the senior gets the comfort of living in a regular home in a residential neighborhood. The problem of a caregiver not showing up is solved. No more dreading the call that nobody is coming to make dinner or help Mom get a shower. With home care costing $28 per hour or more, a residential care home can be a much more affordable option.
